For a single dog, A3 (42cm x 30cm) is the most popular size. It's large enough to show real detail and small enough to fit most walls. For two dogs or a full-body composition, A2 or larger gives the artist room to do justice to both.

Choosing by number of dogs
Single dog:
·      A4 if it's going on a desk, shelf or as part of a gift
·      A3 for a wall, the right size for most rooms and the most common choice
·      A2 if you want a statement piece or have a larger wall to fill
Two dogs:
·      A3 at minimum; you need room for two faces at a size that shows real detail
·      A2 is the better choice and gives the artist more room to work with
Three dogs:
·      A2 or larger; three dogs in an A3 means each face ends up very small
Choosing by where it's going
Above a fireplace or sofa: A2 or larger. Smaller pieces look lost in those spaces.
Hallway or staircase gallery wall: A3 or A4. Gallery walls work better with smaller pieces that don't dominate the surrounding space.
Office desk or shelf: A4 is the right size. A3 is usually too large for a desk display.
Gift (they'll choose where it hangs): A3 is the safe all-round choice. Large enough to look substantial, small enough to fit almost anywhere.
How framing changes the perceived size
A framed A3 looks noticeably larger on a wall than an unframed A3. The mat and frame add visual weight and presence. How to check before you order
Hold a piece of paper in the approximate size against the wall where the portrait is going. Photograph it and look at the photo. It takes 30 seconds and gives you a much clearer sense of how the finished piece will sit in the space than trying to visualise it in your head.
