A blurry or older dog photo can often become a portrait, depending on how clearly the artist can see the dog's face, eyes and markings. Very low resolution, heavy motion blur or photos where the face is mostly in shadow are harder. The honest answer depends on the specific image.
What the artist actually needs
There are a few things that matter more than sharpness. If the image has these, it can usually work:
· Face visible and identifiable
· Eyes at least partially clear
· Main markings and coat colour visible
· Enough resolution that the image doesn't dissolve into pixels when enlarged
Slightly soft focus is not the same as motion blur. A photo that's soft everywhere can still be workable. A photo that's sharp everywhere except the face, because the dog moved mid-shot, is harder.
If your image meets these requirements, it can be used to create a dog portrait from a favourite photo.
What artists can work with
Slightly soft focus: this comes up often with phone photos taken in lower light. If the face is still identifiable and the markings are visible, it's usually fine.
Older film scans or prints: these tend to hold up well. If the original photo was in focus, a good scan holds the detail. A lot of memorial portraits are made from prints that are 10–20 years old.
Indoor low-light photos: fine as long as the face is visible and not buried in shadow.
Crops of a larger photo: sometimes a tight crop of the dog's face from a group shot works better than the full image. If you have a photo like this, send the crop and the full image. The artist can usually tell which is more useful.
What doesn't work well
Heavy motion blur: mid-action shots where the dog is a soft streak. There's no detail to reconstruct.
Face mostly in shadow: the artist can't add information that isn't in the image. Dark, flat, underexposed faces are one of the more common reasons a portrait doesn't turn out the way someone hoped.
Very small digital thumbnails: if the photo has always been a low-resolution image (not just a small version of a large one), there won't be enough detail to enlarge without losing it entirely.
Profile shots: this depends on the style, but if the dog's eye isn't visible at all, it limits what the artist can do. Worth asking before ordering.
If you only have an old photo of your dog
Old photos of dogs who have passed are some of the most important portraits Oh Barney creates. The process is the same as any other portrait: send the best image you have.
A few things that help:
· If you have more than one old photo, send them all. Artists can sometimes pull detail from a second or third image that the primary photo doesn't fully capture: a better angle on the markings, a clearer eye from a different shot.
· Scans of physical prints tend to be better than photos of photos taken on a phone. If the original print still exists, a flat scanner at a reasonable resolution (600dpi or higher) usually gives you the best file.
· Don't assume the photo won't work without asking. Send it first.

What the artist can and can't add
An artist can clean up minor background distractions, work from partial detail in the coat, and make compositional decisions that improve the final piece. They can't invent features that aren't visible in any photo you've provided. The portrait is based on the image. There's no guessing.
